Star Wars Battlefront's PS4 VR game will be 'very special' claims Sony boss

BATTLEFRONT'S hugely anticipated virtual reality experience 'will be very different to the PS4 game' and PlayStation fans could be playing it this October.

BATTLEFRONT: The Star Wars VR game could be a launch title for the PlayStation VR headset

Earlier this month Sony announced the release date and price of their coveted VR headset, formally known as Project Morpheus.

But tucked within the big announcement at the Games Developers Conference was a small mention of a Star Wars Battlefront collaboration.

It not only caught the world off guard, but also promised the ultimate virtual reality experience.

Since the reveal, Sony's Vice president of marketing John Koller sat down for a interview with Fortune to discuss Battlefront's PlayStation VR game and said it could be a "killer app" for the system.

"We are working with EA, DICE, Lucasfilm, and Disney to try and make that experience something so special and so intrinsic to what's in many people's DNA, which is, 'How can I be in that world of Star Wars?'" Koller said.

"Battlefront is going to be one of those games that will really show gamers what it means to be in the world of VR.

It's very special. And just by the nature of it being designed as a VR experience, it's going to be very different than the PlayStation 4 game."

Currently the Battlefront VR game will be exclusive to PlayStation VR and later in the interview Koller also compared the role of traditional console exclusives and how it relates to the VR market.

"The role of exclusive VR games is a little different than what we see in the general console space," Koller said.

"For example, I don't believe that there needs to be one particular killer app. There can be a range of killer apps.

"VR is so personal. It really depends on what experience that person wants and what they think is really great.

"That's different than our (console) platform launches, where you generally can say, 'That's the game' (that will help drive hardware sales)."

In other Star Wars Battlefront related news, fans (or more specifically Season Pass holders) have been enjoying the new Outer Rim DLC.

For anyone who's been living under a rock for the past two months, the new Outer Rim DLC brings a load of new features to the game: four new maps, two new hero characters, new guns and Star Cards, as well as a brand "extraction mode".

There will be a new map added to Tattooine and Sullust, as well as one set in Jabba's palace and another in a smelting factory.

The two new characters will be instantly recognisable to fans of the franchise: bug-eyed bounty hunter Greedo and Sullustan smuggler Nien Nunb will be joining the lineup.

As mentioned, this digital expansion to the game is now available to all Season Pass holders.

But everyone else will have to wait a little longer.

No exact date has been given, but a leak from Gamespot seemed to suggest this content will now be available on April 5 for roughly £10 for all non-Season Pass holders.

NEW HEROES: Two iconic Star Wars characters have also been added to the game

Looking beyond the Outer Rim DLC and Battlefront players can look forward to at least three further expansions to enhance their gaming experience.

The first, Bespin, is planned for launch in Summer and is to focus on Cloud City and could see the inclusion of Lando and possibly Chewbacca as new hero characters.

Following that the Death Star DLC is planned for some time between September and November and is rumoured to see the likes of Obi Wan Kanobi joining the game.

There's also plans for a fourth and final update coming in early 2017 but so far EA have not given away any details of that release.
