Koei Tecmo’s producer, Hisashi Koinuma and director, Tomoyuki Kitamuta have recently revealed some news about their upcoming Attack on Titan game in an interview. The interview revealed that the game will have 10 playable characters including Eren, Mikasa, and Levi. Moreover, the game’s story will follow the first season of the anime. However, while the story will follow the anime, players without knowledge of the “original work” will be able to follow the plot just fine.
After completing the game, players will unlock a Warrior style Free Mode which will allow them to replay stages as their favorite characters. According to the gameplay style, all characters in Attack on Titan will have a movement and a combat mode which players will be able to switch between with R1.
The interview also revealed that Koei Tecmo have replicated the Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear’s wire shot pendulum-like movements in the source material. When using the Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear, players will also be able to shoot the wire. Koei Tecmo further stated that players can kill Titans by themselves as it’s quicker to kill them with back-up. They will also be able to give basic instructions or even direct orders depending on the game’s story.
Game Features listed below
The 10 playable characters are Eren, Mikasa, Armin, Krista, Sasha, Connie, Jean, Levi, Hange, and Erwin.
The story will include everything from the start to end of the first season from the anime, and the characters you control will change depending the part of the story.
All the scenes from the original work and highlights for all the characters will be there to check out in proper events.
The game is made in a way that even those who’ve yet to check out the story of Attack on Titan will be able to get a good understanding of it by playing.
There will also be original episodes that aren’t in the original work. These will focus more on the side characters from the story, and they’ve been supervised by the author and editor to make sure that it goes well with the story of Attack on Titan.
Other than the story mode, there’s an “Outside Walls Investigation Mode.” This mode will let you take on different missions as any character you’d like, and will be used to level up your characters and gather material for weapons and corps funds.
After beating the story mode you’ll get to take on stages with any characters in a free mode, similar to the Musou series.
In battles you’ll advance through the stage as you work your way to the objective. During this time, you’ll get random sub-missions such as “save ___ who got in trouble” appear. Additionally, there will be secret missions that Koei Tecmo say is part of the fun to discover.
Since taking on a Titan by yourself could be dangerous, it’ll be an important strategy to fight alongside allies.
You can give simple commands to your allies that orders them to fight the Titan that you’re fighting or split up and take on their own Titans. Depending on the characters, you’ll also get to give direct orders.
While moving with the 3D Maneuver Gear, you can travel anywhere that can be shot with the wire. The square button shoots the wire and the X button is for using the boost.
The wire automatically shoots and launches you towards that direction. Using the left stick, you can aim towards the direction you want to fly.
Since the 3D Maneuver Gear comes with a great sense of speed there was a problem with 3D motion sickness, but this issue has been solved.
Characters have movement mode and battle mode. Pressing the R1 button near a Titan will put you in battle mode. Once you’re in battle mode, you’ll get to shoot the wires towards the Titans.
The stab-and-swinging motion from the wire that was shown in the original work will be part of the action as well. Again, you’ll hardly ever touch the ground while fighting, which is another way that the game will stick true to the original work.
Once you get a Titan with a wire, you can move around them. Since attack damage is determined on speed and timing, you’ll need to press X to boost and triangle to attack in good timing to take Titans out in one blow.
The blades and 3D Maneuver Gear gas will deplete over usage. The wire shooting distance will also vary depending on the weapon.
Weapons have parameters in durability, sharpness, gas, wires shooting distance, and mobility speed. You’ll get to customize according to your play style.
There are Japanese-style blades and numerous other original weapons.
Defeating a Titan will sometimes result in the appearance of soldiers that got swallowed, and you’ll get to acquire some items.
Resources also drop from Titans. You’ll use this to upgrade or create new weapons.
A Titan’s weak spot is their nape, but destroying all of their parts such as arms and legs will give you a chance at getting some good rewards.
By using each character and increasing their proficiency, they’ll unlock new skills.
Most of the buildings in the city can be destroyed.
During the game, players will have to keep an eye on their weapons stability and the amount of gas that is left behind. Besides this, they will be able to customize their weapons’ durability, sharpness, gas capacity, wire shot range, and movement speed with new items. The game will include a large number of original weapons and more weapons and items can be obtained by killing Titans and through the “Investigation Outside the Walls Mode” in Attack on Titan. Attack on Titan will be released this year for PS4, PS3, and PS Vita in Japan, North America and Europe.
